1.6 Tzutes

A Tzute is a Mayan term, and it is a multipurpose cloth that can be used in many ways such as scarves, shawls, to wrap things in to carry on their head, to wrap a baby in, etc. They are also used for ceremonial purposes. It is usually woven on a back-strap loom and the designs are specific to a particular village. The weaving process of a Tzute, depending on its length and purpose, usually takes about 6 months with various designs.

The Tzute is worn by both men and women. At an early age, girls must learn the weaving process, as the tradition upon marriage is that brides are responsible for weaving a Tzute for their mothers-in-low.
