1.5 Faja o sash

The faja or sash is woven on a back-strap loom and its length, width, and design vary from village to village. It is an essential part of every Mayan woman´s dress as it is used to hold up the corte or skirt. The woman wraps the sash around her corte or skirt several times leaving only the embroidered part visible. In some communities, the color and size of the faja or sash may signify whether a woman is married or single.
